A Freshman Interest Group (a "FIG") is a small group of freshmen enrolled in the same courses that explore a common theme.
Great Minds... Societies throughout history have been shaped and influenced by some of the greatest minds of the time- men and women who dared to dream and explore, and gave life to their ideas and convictions. The Great Thinkers Freshman Interest Group is designed to explore these great thinkers of the past and present- men and women in science, politics, and the arts, in America and throughout the world.
Great Thinkers... Students enrolled in the Great Thinkers Freshman Interest Group are Honors Students. In seminar courses that encourage discussion, Honors students will examine the accomplishments and contributions of great thinkers in history. They will question and challenge concepts and ideas, and learn to think critically and deeply into subject matter that spans all academic disciplines. They will be exposed to the many opportunities for involvement in their community, and be given the skills necessary to become first rate scholars. They will learn to understand that questioning, delving and critically examining accepted beliefs is the core of change and progress.
Great Futures: The Great Thinkers FIG will offer its Honors participants the opportunity for early immersion in the Honors experience—an educationally and culturally diverse community of faculty and student scholars. The Great Thinkers FIG will integrate scholarship, fellowship, participation, leadership and community service learning into an academic experience that leads to professional success and personal fulfillment. The Great Thinkers FIG focuses on the personal development of each student and their own sense of excellence, and enhances this mission through courses that concentrate on great individuals throughout history and the lessons that can be learned from their experiences.
